Follow every one of these rules on every swap, every time. They exist to protect you legally and financially.
Verify Identity
Always match the seller's photo ID (passport or driving licence) to the name printed on the V5C Logbook. If they don't match, walk away.
Check the Watermark
Ensure the V5C Logbook is the genuine article. It must have a 'D.V.L.A.' watermark visible when held to light. A missing watermark is a red flag.
HPI & Finance Check
Never swap without verifying the vehicle has no outstanding finance, is not stolen, and has no hidden write-off history. This is included in every Swap-Safe Report.
Verify Insurance
Ensure you have "Driving Other Cars" cover on your policy, or purchase a temporary 1-day policy for the test drive and drive home. Never assume you're covered.
Notify DVLA Online
Use the official GOV.UK portal to transfer ownership the moment the swap is agreed. Both parties must complete this. Do not leave it for later.
